What is Critical Illness Insurance?
Critical illness insurance provides a tax-free lump sum if you’re diagnosed with one of the specified illnesses listed in the policy and meet the policy’s criteria.
It’s designed to give you financial breathing room — you could use the payout to reduce or clear your mortgage, cover treatment costs, support your family, or adapt your home.
Why you should think about it during your mortgage journey
- A mortgage ties you into a long-term If something serious happens, you still need to keep up outgoings.
- With critical illness cover, you’re not just covered if you die – you’re covered if you live with a serious condition which affects your ability to work, pay the mortgage, or maintain your lifestyle.
- Many lenders make buildings insurance mandatory – but critical illness cover is optional. Still, it could be one of the smartest financial safety nets you put in place.
- If you’re self-employed, have dependants, or your income is the main household income – this cover becomes even more relevant.
What types of illnesses & conditions are covered?
The exact list varies by provider, but typical conditions include:
- Heart attack of specified severity.
- Stroke with specific definitions.
- Certain types & stages of cancer.
- Major organ transplant, kidney failure.
Important: Not all cancers, or all stages, are included – and definitions vary greatly between policies.

What to consider when choosing your cover
- How much cover do you need? Consider your outstanding mortgage, family income, other debts, lifestyle costs.
- What term should you choose? Match to your mortgage term (or when your biggest commitments clear).
- What about exclusions & definitions? Some policies may exclude certain conditions or require a minimum severity.
- What’s the cost & how will it change? Premiums vary by age, health, lifestyle, occupation.
- Stand-alone vs add-on cover? You can choose a critical illness policy on its own, or add it to your life cover.

FAQ's
Do I need it if I already have life insurance?
Not necessarily – but life insurance pays out after death. Critical illness cover pays during life, upon diagnosis of a covered condition. You might want both.
Does it cover all serious illnesses?
No. The cover is only for the conditions listed in the policy, with definitions applied. Early-stage conditions may not qualify.
Can I cancel it later?
Yes – but remember that premiums may increase if you re-apply later, or you might lose certain age or health advantages.
How much will it cost?
Cost depends on your age, health, occupation, amount and term of cover. We’ll provide you clear quotes so you know what you’re paying and what you’re getting.
